How can my friends have unprotected sex and not get pregnant?

I'm almost 19, and use the pill and a condom everytime. Some of my friends never even use protection.. But don't get pregnant. Is it because they're still young? Why can they go without the protection and have nothing happen? But some girls get pregnant at age 16 first try. Why is this?

in any given cycle, a woman has approximately 48 hours of fertility. Basically, you need an egg in your fallopian tubes to get pregnant. this happens when you ovulate. the problem is- that if the egg is not fertilized within a short period of time, it will die. you have 48 hours to catch that egg. if you have sex after ovulation, you will not get pregnant.

Now, here's the kicker. even if the egg is fertilized, it is NOT guaranteed to implant in the uterine wall. you need luck on your side for that one.

to put it another way- with couples who are ACTIVELY trying, and this means having sex at the exact right time (because it is about timing) have a 1 in 5 chance of conceiving. healthy couples generally take 6-12 months of trying to get pregnant.
